Top 10 Tips – How to prepare or what to bring for a cake smash session?
Little Blue Whale Photography’s Top 10 Tips – How to prepare for your cake smash session?
1. Your well-rested baby – Make sure your little one is well-rested, fed, and hydrated. Plan the session time after their nap time which can reduce the chances of a child getting fussy.
2. Cake – If you are bringing one, we highly recommend a simple white naked cake so the main focus can stay on the baby and the backdrop. If you do want to add some color, we often recommend pastel and white icing. Please try to avoid red and brown because those colors do not smash well.
3. Outfits for Baby – Make sure their outfits are cleaned and ironed the day before the photo session. PRO TIPS- do not travel with a baby wearing one of his or her session outfits. You never know if your little one will spit up and/or have a diaper blowout during the ride to the session. Therefore, please plan to change your baby once you arrive at the studio.
4. Comb and Moisturizer – A little comb is always handy when we have to fix their hair from time to time. Moisturizer is always great for replenishing their skin after wiping their mouths from snacks and the cake. We do have moisturizers available at the studio, but in case your baby has sensitive skin, we do recommend you to bring your own.
5. Familiar Items – Feel free to bring their favorite toys, blanket or pacifier to the session to help sooth them and make them feel comfortable in an unfamiliar environment.
6. Snacks and Drinks – Bringing their favorite snacks (puffs or cheerios and please avoid chocolate) is essential and sometimes it will help them stay happy and motivated. Posing and cake smashing is tiring, having something to drink will help your little one feel refreshed.
7. Reusable/non-reusable diapers and towels – A swim diaper and towel will be useful for the splash session.
8. Change of clothes for Parents – Please note, this session can get very messy and there is a chance that you will get messy while helping your little one dig into the cake.
9. Positive Attitude – Be patient, have realistic expectations, relax and enjoy this moment with them.Trust your photographer, we will guide them along. Most children take time to warm up, we will let them go at their own pace. Not all kids enjoy cake smashing and that’s ok! We’ll still be able to capture their true personalities on camera. Let them have fun and show the true side of tem. These images will be memorable and precious – we promise!
10. Communicate with your photographer – Before the session, let your photographer know if you have any concerns or questions. We would love to know what your child’s likes and dislikes. What’s your child’s favorite song or character? If your little one is sensitive to noise or any dietary concerns. We want to do our best to make sure that you and your little one are both comfortable and happy so the more we know about them, the better chance they will engage during the photo session.
