What to expect at a cake smash session with Little Blue Whale Photography?

What exactly is a cake smash session? What’s so special about this?

Cake smash is a trend that has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years. This idea originated from a Mexican tradition known as “La Mordida”. Where the birthday girl or boy gets their face pushed into the cake as they take their first bite. This trend became much more popular in the United States as parents wanted to celebrate and capture these moments of their baby’s first birthday. This is one of the most memorable ones because it marks your little one’s first birthday and it will most likely be the last photo session you will have with them as a baby. After this, your baby will become a toddler!

When should we book a cake smash session?

Most parents like to use the photos from the session for their little one’s party invite. Therefore, the session is often booked a month before their actual birthday. We highly recommend booking your session 6-8 weeks in advance of your chosen date, especially if you want a customized theme. It would give us time to make sure we have the right props and backdrop that you like. Please keep in mind that depending on your customized theme, we may need some time to design it, get additional backdrops, outfits and/props. Some items might require us to order and will take time to ship.

What’s included in the cake smash session?

Do you provide baby outfits?
Yes we do! We have a client closet where you can choose different outfits and accessories for your little one. You are more than welcome to bring your own outfits for them too!

Is the cake included?
Yes we do include a white naked cake in our package. If your little one has allergies, please let us know ahead of time. In some cases, we do suggest parents bring their own naked cake, or we can do the session without the cake.

We provide a simple 6” white naked cake with a cake topper that matches the theme of your session. We want the main focus of the photos to be on your little one and the setup of your choice. For safety reasons, we also want to prevent any chances of a child choking on cake decorations while doing the photoshoot.

What exactly happens during the cake smash session?

Our goal is very simple, we just want to have fun with your little one! Let them lead the way! We go at your child’s pace. If they are not comfortable or they start to get bored, we can move on. If they want a break, we’ll have a snack break. We will never rush or force them to complete the session. We want your little one to enjoy themselves and have fun!

Our cake smash sessions are typically around an hour. To start off the session, we would like for your little one to explore and play with some toys, so that they can get familiar and comfortable in this new environment. Then we will start with some family and sibling photos (if applicable) to get everyone familiar with the camera. Once your little one is all warmed up, we will take a few baby photos before he/she gets too messy from the cake.

After that, we will bring in the cake for the cake smash photos. Some babies will love the cake, some will only delicately nibble the icing, while others might refuse and start crying the moment they see the cake. And that’s ok! We’ll be singing and playing while we capture their true personalities on camera. Lastly, we will take a few bubble bath photos and usually this is the time we get lots of expressions from your baby because babies love water! You will leave with a clean and energy drained baby while we tidy up!

A cake smash session is a very unique way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday. You can be creative and pick a very unique setup or choose a simple and timeless setup. With a little bit of preparation and a fun and professional photographer, you will have these beautiful and memorable photos to treasure and relive this special moment every time you review these photos with your family.
